In Matthew chapter 6:8, right before Jesus tells his followers how to pray he says –
‘….for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. ‘
– Matthew 6:8
My good friend Natalie shared something that happened to her recently that was a great encouragement and reminder to me how our heavenly Father provides for those that trust in him.
It wasn’t anything earth shatteringly big…just something small and quirky… some may say insignificant or silly even. I thought it was lovely though, and was glad she shared it with me so I can share it with you.
This is her story, which I have left pretty much exactly as she communicated to me except for adding some punctuation and removing any identifying detail.
I drove to work and where I like to park was a head of garlic sitting on the car park ground near my door as I get out.
I laughed to myself and said “yes, I better start my garlic now that I have a runny nose and sore throat”…and then closed the door and went upstairs to work.
When I finished for the day, the garlic was still there as a reminder. Thought “it’s gonna get squished…I should take it.” Thought “I have heaps of garlic at home anyway” and left it there.
Next day, arrive in the carpark…same spot and garlic is still there, not squished. Amazed. Leave it and go upstairs.
Come back down later and my car is the only one in the carpark and garlic head is still right near my driver’s door.
I take it this time and put it in my handbag.š
This morning my nose and throat are the same and I see my old garlic sitting on counter near where I take my tablets, have coffee and have water in the morning. Reminded to take some.
As I pull the head apart I start realising the pods are quite empty and squishy. Not a single clove was suitable even though the head was bought several weeks ago. š
Of course I then remember the head of garlic that I grabbed off the ground and got it out of my handbag, firm, beautiful and provided by God even when I didn’t need it then.
I thanked God for watching over me and providing for all of my needs…and ate several cloves. He works like this in my life all the time.…as I’m sure he does for you.
Certainly, we’re going to need more than a head of garlic in life to sustain us, but it’s a great illustration of how God shows his care in even the very small things.
One of the most well know psalms about God’s provision and which also happens to be my favourite, is Psalm 23. Such a beautiful reminder of God’s protection and abundant provision for those that put their trust in him, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
TheĀ LordĀ Is My Shepherd
A Psalm of David.
Ā
Ā¹ TheĀ LordĀ is myĀ shepherd; I shall notĀ want.
Ā² He makes me lie down in greenĀ pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
Ā³ HeĀ restores my soul.
HeĀ leads me inĀ paths of righteousness
for hisĀ nameās sake.
Ā
ā“ Even though IĀ walk through the valley ofĀ the shadow of death,
I willĀ fear no evil,
forĀ you are with me;
yourĀ rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
Ā
āµ YouĀ prepare a table before me
inĀ the presence of my enemies;
youĀ anoint my head with oil;
myĀ cup overflows.
ā¶ SurelyĀ goodness and mercyĀ shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shallĀ dwellĀ in the house of theĀ Lord
forever.
-Psalm 23
I pray that you have been encouraged and comforted by this story and God’s holy word. š
I love this! I have had similar experiences. One particularly notable one was during the pandemic. On the first day of school when both my kids were āat home learningā, I realized that my younger son wasnāt going to do well at the kitchen table and really needed a desk. That night as my husband and I took a walk, I told him that we needed to find a desk that could fit in our family room. About 10 minutes later, we walked past a neighborās house and sitting at the curb was a craft desk in good shape that perfectly fit our needs for the school year! God cares about all of our needs and is so good!
Hi Tiffany,
