If you’re a knitter or crocheter, you’ve probably heard of a Temperature Blanket….the one where you knit/crochet a row of a particular colour to correspond with the high temperature of the day for a whole year. So you end up with a lovely big blanket.

Well I was trying to think of an idea along the same lines, but something smaller…a little more do-able, so I could make them as a gift and maybe something that could even possibly become marketable!

The Temperature Mat

So, I have this idea for a decorative “Temperature Feature Mat”. 24 rows in the round with a corresponding colour for each temperature variation or group of variations for each hour of the day. I find 6 – 8 colours works nicely, but you really can choose any number up to 24!!

Great for:

Perfect for a gift/keepsake to commemorate the birth of a child, a marriage, a baptism or any other significant time that someone might want to remember.

Date & Weather Info:

The unique aspect of this mat comes into play when you have the hourly temperature from a particular location on a particular date and a different colour palette chosen by the person for whom the mat is for.

I have found two reliable websites for weather information dating back to approximately 1994, but depending on date and location, not all the information is as comprehensive as the most recent data.

Check out timeanddate.com and weatherspark.com.

Crochet Info:

The mat I have designed is in double crochet, but you can get as fancy as you like with any number of different stitches. The planning would probably take a bit more effort, depending on the complexity of the design and stitches.

Yarns:

I believe you could use a number of different yarns depending on the look you’re going for. I have tried a cotton and a cotton/acrylic blend. I think a blend will hold up much better, with colour fastness. I also think a mercerised cotton would look beautiful or some other blend with a nice sheen to it…perhaps a cotton/bamboo blend or even silk.

I used a dk weight yarn, but you really have no limits depending on the size you would like and what you might ‘use’ the mat for.

Gift Certificate:

Additionally, I have designed a personalised certificate and temperature tag with the Cricut Maker, to make your Temperature Mat more of a memorable gift. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination and resources!!

If you would like the free template for the certificate or the tag, drop me a line and I would be happy to share it with you. 😊 (to be used with Cricut Design Space)
